General Language Information:

Martu Wangka is spoken by about 1,300 people in and around the Gibson and Great Sandy Desert area of Western Australia. A significant number of Martu Wangka speakers live in communities at Jigalong, Pamngurr, Punmu, Newman and Nullagine, and larger towns in the Pilbara, including Pot Hedland, Warralong and Strelley.

Martu Wangka meaning ‘Aboriginal language’ has developed from a combination of other languages, combining elements of Manyjilyjarra, Kartujarra and some Putijarra, Wamman and  Nyiyaparli.

A relatively strong and widespread language, Martu Wangka is often the first language of Aboriginal children in Western Desert communities.
